Growing Readers at Home was created to empower caregivers with the knowledge, structure, and tools they need to effectively support their child’s reading development at home. Our workshop removes the guesswork and provides caregivers with a clear, step-by-step approach grounded in the Science of Reading.
Instead of relying on tutoring sessions once or twice a week, we teach caregivers how to deliver short, consistent reading lessons at home, where real progress can happen through regular practice.
Our workshop is built around the principles of the Science of Reading, which shows that effective reading instruction must be:
Explicit - skills are clearly taught and explained
Systematic - concepts are introduced in a logical order
Sequential - each lesson builds on the one before it
We show caregivers exactly how to deliver structured reading lessons that take about 15 minutes per session, four to five days per week.
Because the lessons follow a consistent format and build gradually over time, caregivers gain the confidence to support their child’s learning in a meaningful and effective way.
Unlike traditional tutoring, our program:
Empowers caregivers to become confident reading teachers
Provides structured lessons that can be done at home
Removes the need for weekly travel to tutoring sessions
Allows families to work at a time that fits their schedule
One-time investment, lifelong value
Provides assessment of each child to pinpoint where to begin
Provides all the materials you need to teach lessons and to feel confident delivering the lessons
Most importantly, it allows children to receive the consistent practice they need to build strong reading skills.
Everything you need to feel confident, explained in plain language.

Over the course of our careers, we have worked with many students who struggle with reading. While schools are increasingly providing explicit reading instruction, some children still develop significant gaps in their reading skills. Families often turn to tutoring for help, but tutoring sessions once or twice a week are often not enough to close those gaps.
When Laura first considered starting a tutoring business, she quickly realized something important: For many struggling readers, real progress requires frequent practice, often four or five times per week. Traditional tutoring simply doesn’t provide that level of consistent instruction. That realization led to a different idea.
Instead of tutoring students directly, we could teach caregivers how to deliver effective reading lessons themselves. Caregivers are with their children every day. With the right structure, tools, and support, they can play a powerful role in their child’s reading development.

With extensive classroom and leadership experience, Lori Meyer is an Assessment and Evaluation Consultant with the Lambton-Kent District School Board and holds Additional Qualifications in Mathematics and Special Education. She is passionate about helping educators design effective assessment practices to close learning gaps. Drawing on our years of classroom teaching (20 years each) and educator support (3+ years each), we realized we could bring those same proven strategies directly to families. By teaching parents the explicit, systematic methods used at schools, we remove the guesswork and empower you to deliver short, effective reading lessons right at home.
Fun Fact: Laura and Lori are more than long-time friends, former roommates, colleagues, and collaborators - they are even aunts to the same niece and nephew!
